He started studing at the university of Salamanca. however the death of his 2 older brothers made him heir and caused him to drop out of school to accompany his father, the Count of Olivares, in the Court of Philip lllV (1604-7).
When he inherited the mayorazgo he moved to Seville to controlled his territories. But he would return to the Cout in 1615 as gentleman of the Chamber of the Prince; from that position he earned the confidenced of the future king.
